Protection from eviction and Renters' Rights

What are my rights when renting privately?

The Renters' Rights Act 2025 is delivering new rights and responsibilities for tenants. To find out how renting privately is changing visit the government website: Private Tenants

Assured periodic tenants from the 1st May 2026, can only be evicted if their landlord follows the correct legal procedure. This process starts when your landlord gives you written notice to leave the property. The main exception to this is if you live with your landlord and share facilities such as the bathroom or kitchen, in which case the landlord only has to give you verbal notice. Social tenants also are covered by different laws.

Further details for tenants regarding the correct legal eviction procedure from 1/5/26, can be found on the Shelter website. Renters Rights Act: private tenants - Shelter England

If you think your landlord might be trying to evict you illegally or you are unsure about whether you have been given the correct notice please contact the Housing Advice  and Homelessness Prevention Team at Stroud District Council on the link below or call the council on 01453 766 321  if it is an emergency.  I'm at risk of being homeless
