Published

Council Chair Kate Kay led a tribute to former Stroud District Council Chair Valerie Gardiner at Thursday’s Full Council meeting.

Valerie Gardiner, who died on 4 February, served as an elected member for the Trinity Ward and became the first woman to chair Stroud District Council when she was elected to the role in 1987.

She was also a foster carer who provided a home for 46 children.

In her remarks, Cllr Kay said:
“I would like to take a moment for council to remember Valerie Gardiner, a former Stroud District Council Chair, who died on February 4. Elected Member for the Trinity Ward twice, she was also elected as Council chair in 1987. She was the first female chair of this council. Our thoughts are with her family.”
