Stroud District Council marks Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day flag at Ebley Mill

Stroud District Council is proud to support Armed Forces Day by flying the official flag at its Ebley Mill headquarters, honouring the service and sacrifice of the men and women who make up the armed forces community.

Armed Forces Day is a national opportunity to show support for serving personnel, veterans and their families.

As part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening ties with the Armed Forces community, the council has established an Armed Forces Champion group which works closely with local veterans’ organisations.

The council offers a range of support for veterans, including:

  • guaranteed face-to-face interviews with veterans to discuss housing options, homelessness and council tenancy issues.
  • 20% off activities and memberships at Active Lifestyles Stroud District, available with a military or veterans ID card.

Chair of council and Armed Forces Champion Cllr Kate Kay said:

“Armed Forces Day is an important national celebration to honour the commitment and sacrifice of the men and women who serve, or have served, in the British armed forces.

“One of the key messages we hear from veterans is the value of social groups that offer peer support from people who truly understand military life – including the unique camaraderie and banter that comes with it.

“Veterans also emphasise the importance of letting organisations like your  local council or GP surgery know you’ve service. This helps ensure you’re signposted to any specialist services you’re entitled to, and that your GP surgery can better understand and respond to any military-related health needs."

Veterans have shared with the council their frustrations about the challenges of adapting to civilian life. In response, the council produced a short film featuring local veterans speaking candidly about their service and realities of transition. The film is now used to train council staff and has been shared with public service organisations across the country to help improve understanding and support for the armed forces community.
