Stroud District Council funds 50 more bike stands to support walking and cycling across the district
Stroud District Council is funding the installation of 50 additional bike racks across the district as part of its ongoing commitment to walking, cycling and sustainable transport.
The new racks are being delivered through the council’s Walking and Cycling Fund, with the council covering the full cost of the bike stands and their installation.
These 50 new bike racks build on the success of the programme, which has installed 205 bike stands since February 2024.
The initiative directly supports the Council Plan priority to reduce the impact of transport on the environment, by making it easier and more attractive for people to choose cycling instead of car journeys.
Cllr Martin Pearcy, Chair of Stroud District Council’s Environment Committee, said:
“We’re committed to reducing the impact of transport on the environment, and that means investing in practical, on‑the‑ground measures that make walking and cycling easier for everyday journeys. By funding these bike stands and their installation, we’re removing cost barriers and supporting communities, businesses and local venues to offer secure cycle parking that will benefit residents and visitors alike.”
The project is community‑led, with bike stands installed at venues such as community centres, small businesses and places of worship.
Installations are carried out by a trusted local installer, following charity Life Cycle’s guidance and best practice to ensure consistency, durability, accessibility and long‑term use.
Venues already benefiting from the scheme have highlighted its impact. Comments include:
· “These stands will be transformative for people travelling to us without a car, especially young people.”
· “The stands have encouraged more people to cycle to our centre, saving fuel and carbon in doing so. It’s brilliant to have received them free of charge as otherwise we would not have been able to afford them.”
· “‘Take A Stand’ has been a real boost to Nailsworth’s sustainable transport and tourism, bringing more opportunities for residents and visitors alike to cycle to our town with the peace of mind that their bikes will be secure. The scheme was very simple to take part in and wonderfully efficient in its execution.”
Stroud District Council fully funds both the bike stands and their installation, removing all costs for successful applicants. Life Cycle manages the installation process once applications are approved.
