Stratford Park Lido: Community asked to help secure the future of historic landmark
Stroud District Council is issuing a call to action to help secure the future of Stratford Park Lido, as new assessments confirm that £5million of essential works are required before the much-loved 89-year-old facility can reopen.
A number of independent surveys show that the 1937 facility now needs significant work. The scale and interconnected nature of the site means it would all need to be completed together, rather than in phases. Sadly, this means it cannot open for the summer season this year.
However, Councillor Martin Brown, Chair of Stroud District Council Community Services and Licensing Committee, said councillors are committed to helping the community secure the Lido’s future.
“Stratford Park Lido is an iconic and much-loved place in our district’s history, and we are determined to give it every chance of a sustainable future,” he said. “We would gladly borrow the £5million needed if it were financially viable, because we understand what this pool means to so many people.
“But the reality is that not enough people use the Lido each summer to repay a loan of that size, and the Council would have to stop funding other essential services to cover the costs.
That’s why we are asking our community, charities and partners to work with us. We remain hopeful that together we can find a solution that protects this wonderful site for future generations.”
The council has approached Friends of Stratford Park Lido to help take the next steps forward. It is also inviting residents, community groups, charities, and other partners to help with fundraising efforts to safeguard the Lido’s long term future.
Over the next few weeks, councillors will be considering options for this facility, which include asking residents, swimmers and supporters to help explore how fundraising efforts could secure the future of the Lido. Join the fundraising efforts or to find out more, visit www.stroud.gov.uk/Lido
“If no one steps forward,” Cllr Brown said, “the site will be protected from further deterioration until the new Unitary Authority decides on next steps.”
