SDC Leader's blog - w/c 4 August 2025
Enhancing the quality and quantity of housing in our district is a real priority in our Council plan, and with this in mind, I’m pleased that we have begun building high-quality, energy-efficient affordable homes for local people at three brownfield sites in the south of the district. Construction of 44 new homes is underway at developments in Dursley, Wotton-under-Edge and Cam. All are designed to high environmental standards, in a mix of social rent, affordable rent and shared ownership, and due for completion in 2026.
Stroud District Council and our fellow Cotswold Canals Connected partners are inviting everyone to take part in a new survey about the district’s historic canals. The survey runs throughout August and follows a similar one conducted in 2023, which helped benchmark how people use and feel about the canals. This year’s follow-up – which can be accessed from the front page of the Council’s website - is a valuable opportunity for us to understand how attitudes and usage may have changed, and will help shape the future of our waterways. The canal is a much-loved amenity and regularly used by thousands of people, but we are also keen to hear from those who visit rarely or have never been.
Finally, Stroud District Council is seeking an Independent Member to join its Audit and Standards Committee — this is a vital role that helps ensure transparency, accountability, and good governance across the Council’s operations. If you have experience in finance, audit, or risk management and are willing to bring an independent, objective voice to support the Council’s work, we’d love to hear from you - more details on the Job Centre section of our website www.stroud.gov.uk.
