Plan now for a warmer winter – free energy saving upgrades available for Stroud district residents

Warm Homes Local grant

Stroud District Council is encouraging residents to apply early for a Warm Homes Local grant which could help make their homes warmer, healthier and more energy efficient this winter.

The £5.25 million scheme, funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, aims to reduce household energy bills over the long term through energy efficiency improvements and renewable technologies. Homeowners, tenants and landlords can apply via the Warm and Well energy advice service, which is delivered by energy experts Severn Wye on behalf of the six Gloucestershire district councils and South Gloucestershire Council.

Eligible households will benefit from a wide range of energy-saving technologies and receive fully funded home improvements worth tens of thousands of pounds. These include insulation, solar panels, high-heat-retention storage heating, and air source heat pumps. Many households will be offered more than one upgrade.

The funding may be available to households that:

  • are in Gloucestershire and South Gloucestershire
  • live in an energy-inefficient home (with an EPC rating of D, E, F or G)
  • have a combined household income below £36,000 a year or receive certain means-tested benefits.

Making major energy-saving home improvements can feel daunting, but this scheme is delivered by a trusted council partnership.

Severn Wye has 25 years of hands-on experience in energy efficiency, offering impartial advice. Every household is different, so its home energy experts will carry out a property survey and recommend the measures that will make the biggest difference to the efficiency, comfort and energy costs of each home. Severn Wye has sound credentials for delivering the Warm Homes Local Grant; it was one of the highest performers in delivering the scheme’s predecessor, the Home Upgrade Grant.

Cllr Gary Luff, Chair of Stroud District Council’s Housing Committee, said:

“We know that many residents are concerned about rising energy costs and want to make their homes more efficient, but navigating the options can be daunting. This scheme offers trusted, impartial advice and practical support to help people take action.

“Planning ahead now means you’ll be better prepared when winter arrives – and successful applicants could benefit from warmer, more comfortable homes and lower bills.”

Stroud District Council’s Council Plan sets out its commitment to supporting residents living in privately owned and rented accommodation to live in safe, sustainable and good quality homes, by building on the Gloucestershire Warm and Well work to maximise its impact.
