Make a difference in your community
Stroud District Council is seeking an Independent Member to join its Audit and Standards Committee — a vital role that helps ensure transparency, accountability, and good governance across the Council’s operations.
Are you passionate about public service? Do you have experience in finance, audit, or risk management? Are you ready to bring an independent, objective voice to support the Council’s work? If so, we want to hear from you.
As an Independent Member, you will:
- Provide independent assurance on the Council’s risk management, governance, and financial reporting.
- Help maintain high ethical standards and support the Council’s commitment to transparency.
- Attend and contribute to five committee meetings per year (plus any additional meetings as required).
- Receive an annual allowance of £500 plus reasonable travel expenses.
- Serve a three-year term, subject to local government reorganisation.
- This is a unique opportunity to act as a “critical friend” to the Council — asking the right questions, offering constructive challenge, and helping shape a better future for Stroud District.
We welcome applications from people with:
- A background in finance, audit, risk, or governance.
- Strong analytical and communication skills.
- The ability to evaluate complex information and make evidence-based decisions.
- A commitment to impartiality and public service. You must not be a current or recent (within 5 years) councillor or officer of Stroud District Council or any other local authority.
“We’re looking for someone who is passionate about public service, to help us ensure that the council’s work is transparent and accountable,” said Committee Chair, Councillor Bob Hughes. “It’s essential that the right candidate can bring an independent, objective voice, and ideally have experience in finance, audit, or risk management.”
