Leader's blog - w/c 8 December 2025

“The housing committee meets on Tuesday (9 December). We will continue our work to increase the number of homes that we provide in our district.
AT this meeting we will consider a bid under the Local Authority Housing Fund (LAHF) for £653,000 which would enable us to buy four additional homes. The fund, together with prudent borrowing fully covered by rent, will allow us to provide two homes for those on the Afghan Resettlement Programme who supported British forces in Afghanistan and will support two homes for temporary accommodation, helping homeless families stay in our district before securing more permanent housing. We are proud of our previous success in achieving grants of more than £3.6 million, which enabled us to provide 24 properties in our district. These homes are already supporting homeless families and those fleeing violence and conflict.
We will also consider our Resident Engagement and Communications Strategy for 205-2030. This policy ensures we run our service for the benefit of tenants. If you want to get involved, please let me know.
Keeping our homes warm, safe and healthy is a key priority for this council. Our Asset Management Strategy, which we will consider at committee, sets out how we will achieve this over the next five years. I was pleased to visit Nouncells Cross recently where I saw some of the improvement work taking place - demonstrating our commitment to better homes and estates.
Finally, I can also confirm that the first parts of the Renters’ Rights Act will come into force on 1 May 2026. This will end no-fault (section 21) evictions; change the nature of private sector tenancies to provide greater protections for tenants; limit the frequency of rent increases; and give tenants the right of appeal against unfair increases.”
