Leader's blog w/c 29 December 2025
“As 2025 draws to a close, I’d like to share a few highlights from the past year’s work across Stroud District and Gloucestershire for nature, climate and wellbeing.
In September, a public consultation opened on Gloucestershire’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy - one of 48 across England – which will set priorities for restoring nature through coordinated action. I’m looking forward to seeing the final version in 2026.
In November, Climate Leadership Gloucestershire shared its new climate risk and vulnerability assessment to help guide councils, the NHS, and other partners in adapting to warmer, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers. These conditions are already affecting agriculture, health, and the local economy. Our Climate and Nature Strategy for Stroud district was agreed in December and will tackle these challenges with a focus on improving the quality of life for all.
Health and wellbeing remain top priorities for the council, and during 2025 we’ve promoted the new Active Lifestyles services in Dursley and Stroud, launched a Cultural Strategy, and celebrated the expanding network of community hubs, with the opening of the GL13 Hub in Berkeley. We have such vibrant community groups across the area, and I was delighted to learn that 28 projects have now used the council’s Stroud Funding scheme to raise over £400,000.
With another bank holiday this week, please note that the waste and recycling collections normally due on Thursday 1 January will be rescheduled to Monday 5 January. More information is here. If you’re ready to recycle your Christmas tree and would like to support the wonderful work of Longfield Hospice, please book a collection by 6 January
Thank you to everyone who has helped to make our communities such active and welcoming places in 2025. I’d like to wish you all a very happy and healthy 2026.”
Cllr Catherine Braun, Deputy Leader of Stroud District Council
