Leader's blog - w/c 16 June 2025

This Thursday sees the June meeting of the council’s Community Services & Licencing Committee – you can read the papers here. An important item for discussion will be the Stratford Park Vision and Ambition Development Plan.

Stratford Park and the mansion (now the Museum in the Park) were bought by what was then Stroud Urban District Council in 1935. In the 1950s, my grandfather was the Master of the Parks, and a tree planted by him still stands in the Arboretum, so I have a particular soft spot for this cherished green space.

This new Plan sets out how the park will be looked after in coming decades by the council and its community partners. It is based on extensive conversations with park users & other residents, council staff, and organisations which work with or in the park. Stratford Park is a source of pride for the people of Stroud and the many people who use it. In this new strategy we celebrate nature, diversity, and creative ways to help everyone enjoy this fantastic public asset.

Talking of nature, have you tried our popular ‘Discover Stroud District’ app? We have just launched three new trails, each a section of the iconic Cotswold Way. The free app is aimed at residents and visitors alike, and includes fun facts and local recommendation for each of the many trails on offer.

And if you prefer to do your exploring by bike, do try the new Stroud District cycle maps, produced in partnership with Stroud Town Council. Pick up your copy from their offices on London Road in Stroud, or from your local tourist hub.
