The Museum in the Park
Stroud District Council’s Museum in the Park is offering a packed programme of creative, educational and family-friendly events this summer, with something for all ages to enjoy. From hands-on workshops and relaxed sessions to outdoor theatre and community exhibitions, the museum is the perfect place to explore, imagine and play. Or simply explore the museum’s 4,000 objects, walled garden, café and gift shop, with many items at pocket money prices.

Grow a Collaged Garden! Wednesday, July 23, 11am – 3pm. Free (suggested £1 donation per child). Join artist Jenny Bowers to create a giant garden-inspired collage using colours and patterns from the museum’s borders. For ages 3+.
Community Exhibition: Local Memories of WW2 Ongoing during museum opening hours. Free (donations welcome). Marking 80 years since the end of WWII, this exhibition shares local stories and memories from the Stroud District. Created with local history groups.
Amazing Archaeology – Family Drop-in Tuesday, July 29, 11am – 1pm £1 per child. Dig, discover and create with archaeology-themed activities including a mini dig, Roman mosaics, and Anglo-Saxon brooch making. For ages 5+.

Buzz Club in the Walled Garden Sunday, August 31, 11am – 1:30 pm. Free (donations welcome). Discover what’s blooming and buzzing in the Walled Garden. Learn about bees, butterflies and how to become a Bee Guardian. Drop in anytime.

Stratford Park There’s plenty of outdoor space at the 56-acre award-winning SDC-owned Stratford Park including two newly refurbished play area, acres of grassy lawn, a small skate park, a lake, woodland, sensory garden, six top class tennis courts, a 5k parkrun on Saturdays, bands playing in the bandstand on Sundays and a miniature railway which runs on the last Sunday of the month.
There’s a large free car park and you’ll find the Museum in the Park, Active Lifestyles Stroud leisure centre and the Stratford Park Lido there too.

Canals There’s plenty to see and do along the miles of mostly flat and accessible canal towpath. Take a walk or bike ride and spot the wildlife along the way including swans, kingfishers, otters and water voles. A popular route is to walk from Stroud to Stonehouse (or vice versa) and get the train back, or why not work up an appetite on a shorter walk and treat yourself at one of the many canalside cafes.
Cotswold Canals Trust runs 30-minute boat trips run every Saturday from Wallbridge Lock in Stroud, with a longer two hour trip on Wednesday 30 July from Saul Junction. For more details see Boats And Charters - The Cotswold Canals Trust

Sun Days at the Ship Inn Community Space, Stonehouse:
Stories from the Ship Inn - 27 July, 2-6pm. Spend a relaxed afternoon celebrating the heritage, wildlife, and stories of the Stroudwater Canal and the historic Ship Inn. Ship Inn Community Space at Upper Mills Bridge (opposite Wycliffe School). Please note: There’s no parking at the Ship Inn site but it’s easy to get to by bike or on foot along the canal towpath.
Lots of low cost fun at Brimscombe Mill This summer, Kids Stuff Stroud and Brimscombe Mill are bursting with creative, low-cost activities for families, welcoming both locals and visitors to join the fun. From Tuesday to Saturday, Kids Stuff hosts themed drop-in craft sessions from 10am–12pm—just pop in, pay as you can, and enjoy a coffee while your little ones get creative. On Tuesdays, older children can dive deeper into hands-on projects during Craftafternoons from 2–4pm (booking required). Fridays bring the magic of Film Friday, with family movies screened in the Sanctuary Space from 2–4pm, complete with pay-as-you-can popcorn and ice cream from The Long Table.
Throughout the week, families can enjoy scavenger hunts around the Mill, a play area for under-5s, and games including table tennis, pool, and a gaming machine. The Long Table serves up pay-as-you-can jacket potatoes and mini smoothies for kids, alongside their usual lunch offerings—and every Friday evening from 6–8pm, it’s BBQ night!

Roam the commons We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to commons across the district - each offering wide open spaces, sweeping views of the Five Valleys, and plenty of fresh air. Whether you're packing a picnic, flying a kite, walking a stretch of the Cotswold Way, or simply watching paragliders launch from the hillsides, there’s something for everyone.
If you find yourself on Selsley Common, keep an eye out for the vibrant Common Sense on the Common signs, created by pupils from Leonard Stanley School. These colourful reminders encourage everyone to be mindful of grazing cattle, keep dogs under control, take all litter home and avoid lighting barbecues or fires. More info here.
Swim outdoors As well as the indoor pools in Stroud and Dursley there are a number of outdoor pools in the district where you can enjoy a swim in the fresh air:
Stratford Park Lido A 50 metre spring fed pool with a Grade II listed parabolic diving board. The pool was initially heated when it was first opened in 1937 but is now a cold-water pool after the heating elements were dismantled for the war effort and is open for around 100 years during the summer months. Newark Park Explore the historic Newark House, once a Tudor hunting lodge, now a welcoming home with a fascinating past. Wander over 700 acres of estate land featuring waymarked walks, listed buildings, and diverse habitats. Children can enjoy the woodland play area filled with carved animals and a spacious play field. Dr Jenner’s House Discover the birthplace of vaccination at Dr Jenner’s House, Museum and Garden in Berkeley, where the pioneering Gloucestershire doctor Edward Jenner lived and worked. This Grade II listed home offers a fascinating insight into Jenner’s life, his groundbreaking work in immunology, and his many interests—from botany and poetry to fossil hunting and ballooning. Sculpture in Dr Jenner’s garden Running alongside the museum experience at Dr Jenner’s House, “But why think? Why not try the Experiment?” is a striking outdoor sculpture exhibition by members of the Cotswold Sculptors Association, open until 13 September 2025 (Sun–Wed, 11am–4pm). The exhibition features brand-new works by 18 artists who embraced Jenner’s spirit of experimentation by stepping outside their usual creative practices. Each piece offers a fresh and varied interpretation of Jenner’s legacy. During Meet the Maker Week (27 July–3 August), visitors may also meet the artists and see live demonstrations. Build LEGO at Stroud Brewery Stroud Brewery hosts relaxed, family-friendly LEGO session every Wednesday, 4.30-6.30pm. The team rolls out heaps of LEGO and opens the balcony bar for a couple of hours of creative fun. No booking needed, just drop in and build.
Wander around Wotton-under-Edge The Cotswold Way runs right through the centre of Wotton-under-Edge, a bustling town in the south of the district. Walk to Wotton Hill which has spectacular views across the River Severn, or to the Tyndale Monument in nearby North Nibley.

Climb the Tyndale Monument The striking 111-foot Tyndale Monument in North Nibley was built to commemorate local hero William Tyndale, the martyred 16th century Bible translator. The monument is open every day with 121 spiral steps to spectacular views of the Berkeley Vale and the River Severn to the Black Mountains. Woodchester Park The National Trust-owned Woodchester Park has a chain of five lakes set in a tranquil wooded valley, and an outdoor woodland play trail. It’s free to walk around, but please note there’s a charge for parking (free for NT members). Join the Summer of Play mini festival activities, walk the bunting trail around the orchard then enjoy a rest at the Tinkley Gate café while browsing the second hand bookstore. Woodchester Mansion is a unique Grade I listed building, famous for being unfinished and exposing the secrets of its construction. See spectacular stone carvings, the restored Chapel east window, and watch the resident bat colony on CCTV. Explore the district by bike Discover the beauty of the Stroud District on two wheels. Whether you're after a leisurely ride or a more adventurous challenge, there's something for everyone. Pick up a cycling map featuring a variety of local trails - from peaceful, traffic-free routes along the Stroud Valleys Trail and canals, to more demanding climbs and descents through the Cotswolds and Severn Vale. Go to the cinema When the weather’s not playing ball, why not shelter in the cinema with a film? Dursley Sculpture and Play Trail The artwork at Dursley Sculpture and Play Trail in Twinberrow Woods has been created by local community groups with new artworks added throughout the year. Go Outside trails Go Outside maps are fun, child-friendly, interactive maps that help you discover more about the place you live. Each trail is filled with puzzles and fun facts. Choose one that starts in a local area, or use a map to explore Cheltenham or Gloucester: Go Outside UK
Gloucestershire Play Rangers Free, outdoor, active play including den building, fires, arts and crafts, sports and playful games for 7–14-year-olds. Under 7’s are welcome and should be accompanied by an adult. Be prepared to get wet, hot, cold, smelly, and dirty, so wear appropriate clothing. Activities are all `open access’ which means there is no registration and children can leave the site at any time.

Giffords Circus Tweedy the Clown is back at Giffords Circus along a cast of acrobats, jugglers, magicians and musicians. The Laguna Bay will be at Frampton-on-Severn from 31 July – 4 August, and Minchinhampton Common from 7 – 18 August. WWT Slimbridge This summer, WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre is launching its first-ever Dragonfly Festival, running until 22 September. Berkeley Castle Berkeley Castle is bursting with family fun this summer, with Summer at the Castle running until 27 August 2025. Cattle Country Cattle Country Farm Park is packed with summer fun from 19 July to 1 September 2025, including daily animal encounters, goat kid feeding, tractor rides, and splash pool play. Find hidden treasure Have you ever tried geocaching? It’s a fun outdoor treasure hunt that uses a free app on your smartphone to help you find hidden boxes of treasure. Each box is different, but most contain a logbook for you to leave a message in and small items – take one and leave one for others to find after you. Lions at Large – The Pride of Gloucestershire Trail Take a short bus or train journey to Cheltenham or Gloucester and follow a free, family-friendly art trail featuring 32 giant lion sculptures and 54 cubs, all decorated by local artists and schools. Explore parks, streets and open spaces while discovering Gloucestershire’s creative and community spirit. Running daily until 14 September; the large lions will then be auctioned to raise funds for the Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity.
