Visitors are invited to enjoy a programme of creative cultural events at the Museum in the Park this June, running alongside the Society of Wood Engravers’ 88th Annual Exhibition.
The exhibition, which brings together outstanding contemporary wood engravings from artists across the UK and abroad, provides a striking backdrop to a series of engaging activities taking place in the last two weeks of its run.
Inside the museum gallery, visitors can explore the detailed and intricate works featured in the wood engravers’ exhibition, gaining a closer appreciation of this traditional yet evolving art form. With prints and catalogues available to buy, it also offers a chance to take a piece of the exhibition home.
To complement the exhibition, a programme of free events invites visitors to discover more about the process, techniques and stories behind the artwork.
Throughout June, visitors can drop in to film screenings of Modern British Wood Engraving, running every Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4.30pm. The documentary explores how wood engraving is used across fine art, book illustration and design, offering a fascinating introduction to the medium for newcomers and enthusiasts alike.
There are also opportunities to meet artists and see the craft in action. On Saturday 13 June (2pm to 4pm), local printmaker Peter Collins will demonstrate wood engraving techniques in the gallery, giving visitors a close-up view of the tools and skills involved. On Sunday 21 June (2pm to 4pm), Ray Hedger will lead a second live demonstration, sharing insights from his long and varied career as a painter and printmaker.
For those looking for a different way to experience the exhibition, the museum will host a special Gallery Late on Thursday 18 June (7pm to 9pm). Visitors can enjoy after-hours access to the gallery in a relaxed evening atmosphere, alongside a poetry event in the Walled Garden (free entry).
The exhibition continues until Sunday 21 June and is free to enter, with unframed prints and catalogues available to buy, giving visitors the opportunity to take home a piece of the exhibition.
Set in the heart of Stratford Park, the Museum in the Park offers a welcoming space to enjoy art, learn something new and spend time with family and friends.
Cllr Martin Brown, Chair of Stroud District Council’s Community Services and Licensing Committee said:
“This fantastic programme of events gives people the chance not just to view the exhibition, but to engage with it in a unique way. From meeting artists to seeing the techniques first-hand, there’s something for everyone to enjoy at the Museum in the Park this June.”
The Society of Wood Engravers’ exhibition runs until Sunday 21 June.
