Stroud District Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee has approved proposals to progress a Community Asset Transfer (CAT) of land at Canalside, Stonehouse, marking an important step towards community-led regeneration in the area.
At its recent meeting, the committee endorsed the recommendations set out in the report on the proposed transfer of Canalside Land in Stonehouse. The decision supports the principle of transferring the site to a suitable community organisation, subject to the necessary due diligence and formal agreements.
The canal side site has long been identified as a key opportunity for redevelopment and community benefit. The proposed transfer would enable a locally driven approach, empowering the community to bring forward plans that align with local needs and aspirations. The site has been supported by the Cotswold Canals Connected programme, which is restoring the canal network and creating new opportunities for recreation, biodiversity and economic growth across the district.
Leader of the Council and Chair of the Strategy and Resources Committee, Chloe Turner, said: “Approving this proposal demonstrates our continued commitment to working in partnership with community organisations to deliver positive outcomes for our residents. Community asset transfers can unlock local innovation and ensure that valued spaces are managed in ways that directly benefit the community.
“I’ve visited the site a number of times to see the fantastic preparatory work the working group have done to make the site a fun and creative hub for canal side and water-based community activity - it's been exciting to see the group's plans develop and start to come to life."
The council will now continue to work with stakeholders to progress the next stages of the transfer. This will include detailed negotiations, governance arrangements, and ensuring that the proposed receiving organisation has the capacity and resources to successfully manage the asset.
