Stroud District Council is reminding residents of changes to waste and recycling collections over the Christmas and New Year period - and sharing some helpful tips to make recycling easier and support our hardworking crews.
Collection date changes
Because of bank holidays, some collection days will move:
- If your collection would fall on Thursday 25 December it will be collected on Monday 22 December
- If your collection would fall on Friday 26 December it will be collected on Monday 29 December
- If your collection would fall on Thursday 1 January it will be collected on Monday 5 January
All other collection days remain the same.
Please put bins and recycling out by 6am on your collection day.
Tips to support our crews and make recycling easier
We can collect and recycle:
- Tin foil and foil trays – rinse before recycling
- Empty aerosol cans
- Food waste – and remember, reducing food waste is just as important. Find practical tips and recipes at:
- Some wrapping paper – use the scrunch test: if it stays in a ball, it’s recyclable; if it springs back, reuse or put in general waste.
- Cards and wrapping paper without glitter – remove bows and ribbons for reuse
- Most plastics - check our online guide for details:
- Drinks cartons/Tetrapaks – put in your green bin/bag
- Cardboard - flatten, fold or cut to the approximate size of your recycling box and keep dry
- Small household batteries and vapes – place in separate, clear recycled bags on top of your food waste caddy – find out more:
We can’t recycle:
- Soft plastics (eg turkeys wrap, bread bags) - many supermarkets have collection points.
- Flexible foil packaging (eg crisp packets, coffee pouches) – check supermarket collection points.
- Small electricals (eg broken toys, Christmas lights) – donate working items to charity shops or visit a repair café. If broken many DIY stores have collection points.
- Broken baubles and broken glass – wrap well if you have a beige bag.
- Blister packs (eg empty paracetamol packets) – some pharmacies collect these.
- Polystyrene or foam packaging – reuse polystyrene in the bottom of plant pots or place in your general waste bin.
- Clothing – donate to charity shops or use collection bins in supermarkets
- Balloon gas canisters – take to a Household Recycling Centre:
Cardboard should be flattened, folded or cut to the approximate size of your recycling box.

All visits must be pre-booked. Check the latest information at:
Weather-related guidance
If snow or ice prevents collection:
- Leave the bins out for up to two days (including Saturdays, excluding Sundays). If they're still not collected, bring them back in and wait for your next scheduled day
Christmas trees
Real trees can be collected and recycled into garden mulch by Just Giving volunteers for a fee, with proceeds supporting Longfield Hospice:
Councillor Martin Pearcy, Chair of Environment Committee said:
“Our crews work incredibly hard all year round, but at Christmas there is far more waste and recycling than normal, so please spare a thought for them as they are out working hard in all weathers.
“You can make a big difference by cutting down very large pieces of cardboard from online deliveries or big appliances into smaller sections. This simple step makes them easier for crews to handle, saves space in the collection vehicles, reduces trips to the depot, cuts fuel use, and helps provide a quicker, more efficient service for everyone.”
