Stroud District Council has started a £1.8 million investment to improve its largest housing block, Nouncells Cross in Stroud.
The project will upgrade 57 flats across two blocks at Nouncells Cross, and 14 properties on Bisley Old Road in Stroud. Work began in September and is expected to take up to 12 months to complete.
Residents will see a range of improvements, including:
- New roofs at Nouncells Cross
- Replacement windows, extractor fans and door entry systems
- Better lighting and safer steps
- New flooring and resurfaced footpaths and car park
- CCTV installation
- New fencing for the community garden
- Redecorated stairwells and corridors
Feedback from residents has shaped the plans, with new bin stores and refurbished communal drying areas included to help reduce energy costs.
The scheme has been designed by architects Quattro, and is being delivered by MD Group, which has worked on other Stroud District Council regeneration projects including Park Road and Park Parade flats in Stonehouse.
Stroud District Council owns 58 of the properties, with 13 privately owned by leaseholders.
Cllr Gary Luff, Chair of SDC’s Housing Committee said:
“This project represents a significant investment in our housing. Our Council Plan commits to providing good quality, safe and fit for purpose council homes, ensuring tenants can live well. These improvements will also boost energy efficiency, helping to cut carbon emission and reduce energy bills.”
Cllr Natalie Rothwell-Warn, district councillor for Stroud Slade added:
“Listening to residents has been, and continues to be, key to shaping this project. These upgrades will make a real difference to everyday life, creating safer, more welcoming spaces and helping people save on energy costs.”
The improvements will increase energy efficiency across all homes, reducing carbon emissions and supporting the council’s commitment to tackling the climate emergency.
