Reading Well

Receive a free curated book collection and an invite to join three Reading Well Forums per academic year.

Over the past three academic years our Children & Young People Development Officer has been working with Gloucestershire Library Service, Read for Good and local schools to put Reading Well and Reading for Pleasure under the spotlight – we have distributed 39 book collections to local primary and secondary schools.

The Reading Well scheme is a national programme powered by the Reading Agency and is normally delivered through local libraries.

For this academic year (24/25) Stroud District Council has purchased five of the children’s book collections to distribute to local primary schools. The children’s collection contains 32 books with a retail price of £240.00

Reading Well collections for children (7-11) and young people (13-18)

“Reading Well for Children provides quality-assured information, stories and advice to support children’s mental health and wellbeing. Books have been chosen and recommended by leading health professionals and co-produced with children and families.

The booklist is targeted at children in Key Stage 2 (aged 7-11), but includes titles aimed at a wide range of reading levels to support less confident readers, and to encourage children to read together with their siblings and carers.”

This project aims to bring like-minded people together to explore engagement with the book collection and also discuss Reading for Pleasure. Every school that receives a book collection also receives an invite to join three Reading Well Forums per academic year.
