Victorian Abundance: 19th Century Stained Glass in the Cotswolds

Friday, February 17, 2023

Chances are, if you see stained glass in a church it will be Victorian. Often reviled today, Victorian stained glass nonetheless often brought high-quality glass back into our churches, and became a big industry. At first trying to copy medieval designs, glass developed over the century with work by artistic luminaries like Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris and Henry Holiday, alongside big name firms like the Birmingham-based Hardman’s, innovative glaziers Powell’s of Whitefriars and the sweet storytelling of Charles Eamer Kempe. Join Kirsty Hartsiotis to explore this often forgotten period in Stained Glass history. After the talk, enjoy coffee and cake.
