New community lottery tickets are selling fast and boosting local good causes

Published: Monday, 1 March, 2021

Local good causes are set to boost their finances now that tickets for the Lucky Severn Community Lottery are on sale.

Tickets for the Lucky Severn Community Lottery have been selling well since they went live on Tuesday 16 February. The lottery is an opportunity to help local good causes with the chance of winning the £25,000 jackpot.

Deryck Pritchard, Fundraising Manager at SARA Sharpness Lifeboat and Rescue Station said: “We were keen to support the lottery not only for the benefits it can bring to us as a charity providing a valued search and rescue service; but also for the benefit it will bring to Stroud district as a whole. For smaller charities this money would make a big difference, so I would encourage other local good causes to sign up as well."

Players have a 50 to one chance of winning one of the prizes, which range from the £25,000 jackpot to three extra tickets.

There are two ways to take part in the Lucky Severn Community Lottery scheme. Stroud district good causes will be able to set up their own lottery page, and will receive 50p in every pound spent by players using this method. A further 10p in every pound will go into a general Stroud district good causes fund, with the remainder being put towards prizes, operating costs and VAT.

Players who do not wish to support a specific cause can still take part in the Lucky Severn Community Lottery, with 60p of their ticket price going into the general Stroud district good causes fund, which will be distributed by the council.

Stroud District Council Leader Doina Cornell, said: "The Lucky Severn Community Lottery is an innovative way to support local charity and voluntary organisations, at a time when the pandemic means their work is more valuable than ever, but many of the usual fundraising events they’d be running aren’t possible due to restrictions.”

The society lottery concept is an idea other local authorities are exploring and has already been successfully launched by several councils. Lottery management company, Gatherwell, has been appointed to run the scheme, having already launched similar lotteries with around 80 councils across the country including Cheltenham, Gloucester and Forest of Dean councils.

Ben Speare, Gatherwell's Managing Director, said: "We are delighted that Gatherwell have been awarded the opportunity to run the Lucky Severn Lottery and are excited to see the positive impact on all of the good causes involved.”

Teckels Animal Sanctuaries, Wild Hogs Hedgehog Rescue, SARA Sharpness Lifeboat and Rescue Station, Cotswold Canals Trust and Sunflowers Suicide Support are just some of the local good causes that have signed up to the Lucky Severn Community Lottery at the time of publication.
