"Wednesday 8th March is International Women’s Day – with the focus this year on embracing equity in society. This recognises that equal opportunities aren’t enough, as people start from different places, so true inclusion requires equitable action. This is a real focus for the council, with equality, diversity and inclusion core to all of our work, and it’s clearly important for our local communities too. It was great to see that the monthly family-friendly community bike ride from Brimscombe Mills to Stroud on Saturday was followed by an inspiring discussion on Women in Cycling.
There was good news this week about the opportunity for social housing tenants to be involved in the development and improvement of social housing policy, to ensure that it reflects the needs of tenants. I was delighted to hear that one of our former Housing Committee Tenant Representatives has been selected to participate in the national Social Housing Quality Resident Panel. Ian Allen from Dursley, who has been a council tenant since 2011 has already made a significant contribution to housing work in Stroud district and I enjoyed working with him on the Housing Committee. He’ll now be sharing his skills and experience on social housing matters at this national panel, which will discuss with ministers the Government’s social housing quality programme.
Cost of living pressures continue to affect us all, and for anyone you know who is struggling to cover bills or experiencing financial hardship, please let them know that there is help available on a range issues, from money, energy & water, food, family & childcare, mental health support and warm spaces here (or telephone 01453 766321).
I continue to support the campaign against cuts to vital bus services, which of course will have a cost of living impact for so many people in our local area."
