Leader's blog - 24 May 2023

"The Annual General Meeting of the district council took place on Thursday 18th May and all the main posts on the council have been filled. There has been a change of Chair with Cllr Doina Cornell taking on this role. We also welcomed a new member, Cllr Gary Luff (Green) who was elected the previous day to represent the Painswick & Upton ward.

I’m looking forward to continuing to work within the Alliance that runs SDC. As an administration we remain focused on the three key priorities of our Council Plan, Environment and Climate Change, Community Resilience and Wellbeing, and Economy, Recovery and Regeneration and on achieving more of our objectives over the coming year, which will benefit every resident and business in our district.

It was great to see people and projects that SDC work closely with being honoured at the Stroud Town Awards. Big congratulations to Cate James-Hodges, leader of the Stroud District Youth Council (SDYC), who was named Young Person of the Year, also to  NoSH (Network of Stroud Hubs) which unites six community cafes/pantries providing free/affordable food who were awarded the Mayor’s Resilience Award and to the Shambles Market, named as Trader of the Year. As owners of the site SDC work with the organisers of the market to ensure a safe, local market that runs just on the other side of the high street from the Farmers Market.

With half term approaching many of you will be thinking of ways to keep children entertained and SDC will once again be issuing a list of either free-of-charge or very low-cost activities to help you with that."

Cllr Natalie Bennett

Deputy Leader, Stroud District Council
