"This week presented a fantastic opportunity for anyone who likes to discuss the weather (ie every single one of us). Last Wednesday I was interviewed by BBC Points West at the Lido in Stratford Park, to discuss the brilliant work done by Friends of the Lido volunteers, Everyone Active staff and SDC officers to get the pool open again for residents to enjoy.
Aside from swimming in the Lido’s cool spring water, this week’s sun might also persuade you to dust off your tennis racket and practise your Williams’ backhand. In which case, get yourself to the Stratford Park tennis courts, which have had a beautiful makeover, thanks to SDC officers securing funding from the Lawn Tennis Association. You can book a session now, bit late for Wimbledon maybe, but an excellent way to spend a sunny afternoon.
The sun shone for most of the week, but Monday, June 12 saw flash flooding in parts of Stroud that caused havoc to residents. The emergency caused roads to be closed and businesses to be flood-damaged. SDC staff helped in many ways, including managing traffic around a suspected sinkhole, after worried residents reported that some motorists had moved barriers. Thankfully the road is now open.
To prevent more adverse weather events, SDC continues its efforts to become a sustainably sound council. At tomorrow’s Community Services and Licensing Committee we will discuss another pot of funding secured by hardworking officers. This funding is for a local company to fit renewable heating systems in three of Stroud District Council’s largest public buildings. This exciting project ensures we are supporting the local economy as well as furthering our aims to protect the environment and our futures."
