"The Museum in the Park was home to a couple of memorable events this last weekend, when Stroud District Council Chair Steve Robinson joined myself and members of all political parties to congratulate Forest Green Rovers FC for winning the English Football League Two title and securing promotion to League One next year. We were delighted to welcome FGR captain Jamille Matt, team mates Jordan Moore-Taylor and Dom Bernard, plus club chairman Dale Vince, backroom staff and a very special guest – the trophy itself. Mr Vince was also presented with a SDC plaque by Steve Robinson, who is a ward member for Nailsworth and has been a supporter since he was young; he reminded us that his late brother David played in goal for FGR in the 1950s.

After the event, with the sun shining down on the beautiful colours and diverse array of plants and flowers in the Walled Garden, councillors and former councillors from Labour, Green and the Liberal Democrats gathered for an informal celebration of ten years of the Cooperative Alliance leading the council. There are quite a few councils across the country that now have similar arrangements, but ours must be one of the longest in existence, and its testimony to the diversity of our district and the power of a cooperative and consensus-based approach to politics - something we do need more of in this world.

The Museum in the Park is open Tuesday to Sunday and entry is free-of-charge. Included in the range of exhibits is Forest Green Rovers memorabilia including a shirt worn in the 1982 FA Vase final victory. For more details visit

Our new electric road sweeper has now taken to the streets, and will save 8 tonnes of carbon a year. We are looking for a good name - have your say on SDC's social media or website by 9pm Friday 20 May and tell us the reasons why. We aren't going to call it Sweepy McSweep Face!"
