Council tax band revaluation is free

Stroud District Council is warning its residents to be wary of telephone cold callers offering to arrange council tax refunds on their behalf. The council has been contacted by worried residents who have been phoned by a company telling them they are in the wrong council tax band and that they are entitled to refunds of thousands of pounds from overpaid bills. In some cases the callers have said that they were calling on the council’s behalf.
A spokesman for the council said:
"These calls are not from the council and if residents have any queries regarding their council tax banding they can be made direct and free of charge through the Valuation Office, the agency which sets the council tax bands. A third party making contact via phone is likely to charge for such a service, and whilst it is not illegal for companies to provide this service and charge for it, if they say that they are from the council, they are overstepping the mark."
Any householder who thinks that their property is in the wrong band can contact the Valuation Office and any refund will be paid in full to them. More information can be found on the Valuation Office’s website at www.voa.gov.uk or by calling the Valuation Office Agency on 03000 501501.
