Could you be Stroud’s first Bicycle Mayor?

Published: Tuesday, 10 January, 2023

* New deadline for applications: Friday 17 February *

Pedallers with a passion for championing cycling for everyone are urged to apply for a new role which will help all who ride a bike in Stroud district.

Bicycle Mayors can accelerate change and be the human face and voice of cycling locally. And these changemakers are connected across a global network – creating greater visibility, rapidly sharing ideas, challenges and solutions.

Since the first Bicycle Mayor was elected in Amsterdam in 2016, 109 more plus five junior mayors have been elected.

They collaborate with residents, activists, government, and industry; promote the work of others in their area; share best practices and lessons learned; and collaborate on regional and global efforts during a two year term. They can stand for another term.

The Bicycle Mayor network will support them through newsletters, working groups, training, workshops, events and a resource hub, and be backed up by regular one-on-one check-ins.

“Supporting development of an integrated active travel - walking and cycling – and public transport network is an objective of our Council Plan and we are committed to this because it is good for the environment and good for peoples’ health,” said SDC Environment Committee Chair, Chloe Turner.

Committee Vice-Chair Robin Drury-Layfield added:

“Cycling infrastructure needs to be improved and as a council, we are committed to doing all we can. A Bicycle Mayor can be a key ‘critical friend’ and an agent for the change we and our environment need.”
