Updated advice about paying your rent

Did you know 2019/20 is a 53 week rent year?
Stroud District Council charges rents weekly, with the rent charged every Monday. Usually, there are 52 Mondays in the year so you pay rent 52 times each year.
This financial year there are 53 Mondays (this happens every six years) so you will be charged rent 53 times and will need to make 53 payments, if you pay your rent weekly.
If you pay your rent monthly, by cash via online payments or the automated telephone payments, you will need to work out what you need to pay using this formula “weekly rent x 53 ÷ 12 = monthly rent”
For example, if your weekly rent is £83.91
£83.94 x 53 = £4,448.82 ÷ 12 = £370.74* monthly payment due
*rounded up to nearest penny
We will send you a letter confirming your payments. You will see that the calculation of your monthly rent does not match the rent on the rent notification letter recently sent to you. This is because we have used the above formula to calculate your monthly rent payments.
Bank Standing Order
Use the formula to work out your rent and then contact your bank and ask them to adjust your payments; we cannot do this for you.
If you claim:-
Universal Credit - this is paid monthly not weekly, so you will get the equivalent of 52 weeks rent paid to you, not 53.
This is a Government decision but they are currently considering amending the way they calculate rent allowances for social housing tenants claiming universal credit. This follows lobbying from the National Housing Federation and other social housing landlords.
Until a decision is made, you will be expected to make a payment covering the 53rd week.
Housing Benefit - your usual entitlement will be paid for the 53rd week (subject to any changes in your circumstances).
