Wotton under Edge update

Published: Monday, 17 September, 2018

We're making progress with our improvements to blocks of Stroud District Council owned flats in Wotton under Edge.

Before we started work we consulted with tenants who reported that one of their biggest concerns on the estate were the bin areas. Being located out of sight in the car parks meant that they were a target for people from outside the area to drive up and fly tip bulky waste there, rather than take it to the household recycling centre. As a result there often wasn’t enough room for residents’ waste bags which would be placed on the ground, often spilling open. Rubbish was strewn around the area, blowing around the estate and making it unsightly for everyone.

After consulting with partner agencies, including our waste and recycling contractor, bin storage manufacturers, and visiting other estates which had resolved similar problems, we decided to move the bin area away from the car parks, which will make it more difficult for bulky waste to be dumped there and will lead to more car parking spaces. We have increased bin storage capacity so there should be fewer overspills on the ground. It’s clearer which bins are for recycling, which will lead to less contamination. We chose natural wooden bins over plastic designs as they will fit in with the new play area.

We are refurbishing the blocks of flats by replacing drainpipes, soffits and fascias, and painting internal communal areas and laying new flooring.

The improvements aren’t finished yet – there will be more landscaping, planting and clearer signage. Moving the old bin stores will create more car parking spaces and the whole car park will be cleaned.
