Renewable energy to heat leisure centres and museum

An ambitious £5million project to replace aging gas boilers with brand new renewable heating systems at three Stroud District Council-owned sites – Stratford Park Leisure Centre and The Museum in the Park in Stroud and The Pulse leisure centre in Dursley is underway.

The cutting-edge green technology will use recycled heat (including from the swimming pools and changing rooms at the leisure centres) as heating, boosted by additional solar panels.

It will save hundreds of tonnes of carbon emissions every year and is a key part of Stroud District Council's pledge to do everything in its power to ensure the district becomes carbon neutral by 2030.

The work is initiated by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and is delivered by Salix Finance and SDC and is being carried out by Stonehouse-based company, Cotswold Energy Group.

While most of the work will take place behind the scenes with no impact on users, we will have to close each site to the public for a short time. Details will be posted here:

Stratford Park

The Pulse

The Pulse will close for one week during half term (30 October until 6 November 2023).

During this period the main transformer will be replaced and the new heat pumps will be tested before the heating is switched over to the new system and the gas boilers decommissioned. While the work is taking place we'll be making the most of the closure to re-tile the changing rooms and carry out improvements to the Castle Street car park, which means there will be fewer spaces available than usual.

The timing means that there will be no disruption to swimming lessons and school swimming sessions.

Alternative swimming, gym and fitness sessions will be available at Stratford Park Leisure Centre in Stroud.

Bus 65 (Stagecoach) and 65a (Cotswold Green) go to Stroud via Uley and Nympsfield, Monday to Saturday; there’s more information and links here: www.dursleytowncouncil.gov.uk/travelling-by-bus

If you have any questions about the closures, please get in touch with a member of The Pulse team – details are available on the website www.pulsedursley.co.uk
