Council tax - empty property notification
Properties undergoing major repair or uninhabitable
If your property is having major work done to it (such as structural alteration or major repair) you may be able to receive a 25% discount your property for up to 12 months (class D), after which the full charge would be levied on your property.
If the property is empty and unfurnished for two years or more an additional 50% premium would be added making a 150% charge. When the class D discount expires a 150% charge will be levied immediately if the property has already been empty and unfurnished for two or more years.
How to apply
If you wish to claim the discount please contact the council tax section on 01453 754865 or email: email@example.com to make an appointment for our inspector to visit your property.
Unoccupied and unfurnished properties
If your property is unoccupied and unfurnished you may be able to claim a 25% discount on your property for up to 6 months. A full charge would be payable after 6 months.
If the property is empty and unfurnished for two years or more an additional 50% premium would be added making a 150% charge.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: the above discounts are levied on the property and not the account holder. If the liable person for council tax changes after a property becomes unoccupied and unfurnished, due to a tenancy ending or the property being sold, the start date for the discount does not change. Therefore all or part of the discount may have been used by the previous liable person.
Tell us about a change
If you no longer qualify for the empty property discount please let us know by emailing email@example.com, phoning the council tax helpline (01453) 754 865 or write to us at the council, quoting your council tax account reference number and/or address.
You may have to pay a fine if you don’t tell us.
