Council tax - empty property notification

Properties undergoing major repair or uninhabitable

If your property is having major work done to it (such as structural alteration or major repair) you may be able to receive a 25% discount your property for up to 12 months after which the full charge would be levied on your property.  If after two years the property was still unoccupied and unfurnished then an additional 50% premium would be added to your charge. (150%).

If you wish to claim the discount please contact the council tax section on 01453 754865 to make an appointment for our inspector to visit your property.

Unoccupied and unfurnished properties

If your property is unoccupied and unfurnished you may be able to claim a 25% discount on your property for up to 6 months.  A full charge would be payable after 6 months.  If the property has been unoccupied and unfurnished for two years or more then an additional 50% premium will be added to the charge (150%).

Important note:  the above discounts are levied on the property and not the account holder.  If the liable person for council tax changes after a property becomes unoccupied and unfurnished, due to a tenancy ending or the property being sold, the start date for the discount does not change.  Therefore all or part of the discount may have been used by the previous liable person.

How to apply

If you wish to claim the discount please contact the council tax section on 01453 754865 or email: revenue.services@stroud.gov.uk to make an appointment for our inspector to visit your property.
