Renew an existing licence

The Licensing Section will send you a renewal form in the post. The renewal form will detail the documents that we require to complete your renewal. You must renew your licence at least 7 working days before the end of the month. Please note that it is your responsibility to renew your licence.

If you have not received a renewal form from us, or if you have misplaced the form please contact us at licensing@stroud.gov.uk

Renewing your licence(s)

To renew your licence(s) you must fill out the renewal form and return it to us along with all of the supporting documents that we have requested from you. You can return the form and supporting documents to us either by emailing photos/scans of the documents to licensing@stroud.gov.uk or by posting them to the Council Offices at Ebley Mill, marked for the attention of the licensing team. Do not send a cheque, you can pay online or the licensing team will telephone you to make a payment.

DBS Check

You may need to apply for a DBS check as part of your renewal, if so, you will need to apply online. When you have submitted your online form you must note the reference number on your renewal application form. As detailed on your renewal form, you will also need to submit three forms of I.D. in order for us to complete the check. A full list of acceptable documents can be found here. In current circumstances, we will accept photographs of these documents.

DVLA Check

We need to check your drivers licence with the DVLA every you renew your Stroud District Council Driver Licence.  This will tell us when your licence expires, whether you have any endorsements (or points), and if you’ve been disqualified. This service is free of charge and allows you to generate a licence 'check code' for you to share your driving record. The code is valid for 21 days and can only be used once. You will need your driving licence number and national insurance number to create a code.

You can generate a check code using the following link https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence. You will need to make a note of the check code on your renewal form. Please note that the code is case sensitive.

Tax Conditionality Checks

From 4 April 2022, the rules changed when renewing a Taxi and Private Hire Drivers licence and Private Hire Operator licence. As part of our renewal you will be required to do an online tax check.

After you complete the tax check you’ll be given a 9-character code. This is your tax check code. You must give it to the licensing authority with your licence application — we will not be able to process your renewal application without it.

For further information about the tax conditionality checks please click here.

Renewed taxi or private hire badges and internal discs

Your badges/internal disc will be posted to you at our earliest convenience. Ahead of receiving your badges/internal disc the licensing team will email you an interim authorisation notice. If you do not have an email address we will post it to you. You can show this letter to passengers or any Officers if you are stopped and have not yet received your badges/internal disc. If you can't print the letter you can show it from your phone.

I do not want to renew my licence or wish to surrender my licence

Email the licensing team on licensing@stroud.gov.uk and we will cancel your renewal or surrender your licence as well as arrange for any refunds for plate deposits or remaining months that may be due. Refunds will be made to your bank account so you will need to provide the licensing team with your bank details.
