Better local government and community involvement
To achieve better local government and community involvement the following proposals have been put forward:
- the end of old style council leaders, with options including: directly elected mayors, a directly-elected executive or indirectly elected council leaders with four-year terms
- citizens would be able to call for community action over failing services
- local strategic partners would have a duty to co-operate
- the slashing of performance indicators in preference of community satisfaction
- the opportunity for new unitary councils to emerge (i.e one body to look after the delivery of services currently provided by district and county councils)
