The Stroud Public Realm Strategy project is led by the Stroud Concordat, a body comprising representatives of Stroud District Council, Stroud Town Council, Gloucestershire County Council, and Project Stroud.

The Concordat commissioned NEW Masterplanning to develop the Strategy. This company has a history of working in Gloucestershire, including the Gloucester City Centre development and Gloucester Quays. Support has been provided by Hamilton Baillie traffic - a shared space specialists.

The Strategy sets out a series of strategic priorities seeking to achieve a better balance between pedestrians and traffic in the historic centre, to encourage more people to explore the town, stay longer and spend more money in local businesses. In summary the key priorities include:

  • Improving the historic centre
  • Improving traffic management
  • Improving connectivity, and
  • Guidelines for improving ground surfaces, street furniture, lighting, public art and planting.

The consultation process has been extensive, consisting of input from the public, information from several stakeholder group meetings, input from Concordat members and elected Members. These events and opportunities which have been occurring since January 2008, have been instrumental in the development of the Strategy. There has also been local press coverage on a number of occasions.

The Public Realm Strategy Exhibition period has now closed. Stroud Town Council adopted the Strategy at their meeting in January 2009, and Stroud District Council adopted the document through Council on 16th April 2009. This final document is included below.
