Proposed BT Payphone Removal Programme

Consultation Information

BT have commenced its programme of proposed public payphone removals across Great Britain. Each local authority in the Country are in various stages of the consultation process.

Part of Ofcom's review in 2005 states that it is the responsibility of the local authority to initiate its own consultation process to canvas view of the local community on proposed closures.

BT have identified 51 public payphones to be removed in the Stroud District. These were identified by BT as they have "little use". They placed notices in these boxes at the start of June 2008. The list of those subject to consultation is shown below:

First Consultation

It is advised by BT and Ofcom that the District Council are to implement two consultation phases.  The First phase of receipt of public submissions closed on 14th July 2008. Ofcom and BT were advised of the results on 21st July 2008, and the results were also published for public viewing on 23rd July 2008 (web and newspapers).

Final Consultation

The Final consultation closed on 22nd August 2008. Based on Council's investigations and input from the local community the attached document shows the results. These results have also been sent to the Secretary of State and BT.

Please use the list above to select the phonebox you wish to comment on.

Please be aware that any phone boxes which Council object to being removed will be scrutinised by BT. It is not the number of people objecting to the removal that BT will be considering it is the quality of the information about why it is to be retained.

Stroud District Council is satisfied that it has met all statutory timeframes indicated by the Secretary of State and BT, which is to complete all consultation and notify relevant bodies by 6th September 2008.

Decision by Secretary of State and BT

At this stage no information has been forthcoming on the timeframes which will be imposed by the Secretary of State and BT in relation to advising which public payphones are to be removed.

Once Stroud District Council is informed of the decision, information will be sent directly to the Parish/ Town Council's as well as to those who submitted an objection/ comment.

The information hotline (01453 754092) will remain active for a period of time after the decision is made by the Secretary of State and BT. This will enable those who do not have internet access to obtain a copy of the results.
