Dursley Market Place Paving Project

To complement the construction of the new Sainsbury's supermarket for Dursley, a partnership group, comprising Dursley Town Council, Stroud District Council, Gloucestershire County Council, Vale Vision and Dursley Town Trust, are working together on a project to improve the paving surface surrounding the Market Place.

The aim of the project is to:

  • Complement the historic features of the site.
  • Clearly direct traffic exiting from Parsonage Street through to Castle Street.
  • Stop illegal access through the No Entry where Parsonage Street meets Castle Street.
  • Be suitable for pedestrian movement i.e. does not create a slip or trip hazard.
  • Be suitable for vehicle purpose i.e. vehicle weight and manoeuvring.

Public Consultation Phase

The public consultation phase for Dursley Market Place Paving Project took place between 10th March and 25th March 2009.

The results of the consultation have been sent to Illman Young Architects, who have provided the following architectural concept.

Construction Phase

In relation to delivery of the Market Place paving project, it is advised that contractors AD Bly have been commissioned to undertake the ground works. This is the same ground work contractors who laid the Sainsbury’s paving, so we are assured of consistency and knowledge of the site.

It is proposed that works will commence around the Market Place from 12th April 2010. It is anticipated that the period of construction will be a maximum of 8 weeks, however if there are no disruptions, a shorter time period would be expected. The following document shows the proposed phasing plan.

Road Closure - Phase 6

It is important to draw your attention to Phase 6. This work is anticipated to take 1 week and requires a complete road closure at the junction of Parsonage Street (near Stroud & Swindon) and Castle Street – a length of approximately 23m.

It is anticipated that the closure will be between 10th and 23rd May. It will be necessary for delivery vehicles and vehicles undertaking essential access to Parsonage Street to make alternative arrangements.

Access to Businesses Adjacent To The Market Place

AD Bly have given reassurance to businesses trading adjacent to the Market Place that access will be maintained at all times. The contractor proposes that works will be undertaken after hours and on the weekend in the vicinity of door ways in order to minimise disruption. Provision will also be made for general pedestrian accessibility.

There will be no need for temporary traffic lights on Castle Street.
