Stroud District Youth Council recently welcomed their German counterparts to the Stroud district for a memorable five day visit.
A group of nine young people, aged 15 to 19 years old, from Stroud's twinning district of Gottingen in northern Germany, came over to sample the sights, sounds and people of the Stroud district.
Highlights of their trip included visiting youth groups and venues across the area. During their stay they had the opportunity see Stroud's Rural Peer Education Project in action with their Anti Bullying workshop, Wotton-under-Edge Youth Centre and meet with Stroud District Youth Council to discuss how the views of young people can be heard and how youth forums link to the youth council and in turn influence the adult council.
Also on the itinerary was a trip to meet Cam and Dursley Youth Forum. The youth forum talked about the proposed new youth centre for Dursley and the huge work that they have done to try and make this happen. This was of particular interest to the Gottingen youth group as they are keen to build their own youth centre back in Germany.
Tom Lydon, Chair of Stroud District Youth Council said: "It was great to meet the German group, everyone got on really well, some are now keeping in touch via facebook". Steve Miles, SDC Senior Youth Officer added: "The visit was hugely successful and has opened up a great opportunity for the respective groups to possibly meet and work together again."
The visit culminated in an Anglo German Supper held at Stroud Youth Centre on Friday 9th October. The theme was English and German food, and the buffet table heaved with delicious local produce from Gloucestershire and delicacies brought along by the German visitors. All youth groups and people that they had met during their stay were invited. The supper was very informal and lots of fun!
The Gottingen group left on Saturday morning and continued onto London where they enjoyed a two day stay.
