Salsa on prescription a great success!

Release Date: 06 July 2009

Local residents in Cam and surrounding areas have been putting on their dancing shoes for a new scheme called Dance on Prescription. Since April 2009, Stroud District Council, World Jungle and local doctors and nurses have been running a course of dancing aimed at improving people's health.

Under the guidance of Thomas Melendez of 'Salsa Del Sol', salsa dancing is proving popular among local residents, who have been strutting their stuff Latino style each week at Cam Memorial Hall. Jill Jones, 74 said:

"I joined the scheme to improve my health and because I love any type of dancing. I feel more and more motivated and enjoy every session and I'm already feeling the benefits in my fitness and health". Jackie, 56, thinks the salsa classes are all about "making good friends, having great laughs and keeping fit at the same time!"

What's more, during the pilot year classes are offered at a heavily reduced cost to patients, another reason to dust off your dancing shoes and join in the fun!

There is a wealth of research supporting the benefits of regular dancing for people's health. This includes; lower blood pressure, improved mental health, increased suppleness, weight control and reduced risk of osteoporosis to name a few.

Gina Humphris, Physical Activity Referral Coordinator for Stroud District Council stated:

"This innovative project offers patients of any age and ability an alternative to conventional forms of exercise; what better way to improve your health than by moving to music, meeting friends and having fun!"

The second beginners' course for referred patients is due to get underway on the 9th September. Weekly classes begin at 6.30pm. For those who are more familiar with Salsa, a new intermediates session will also be running every Wednesday from 7:30pm which is open to all.

Priority for places on the next beginners course will be given to those patients living within the Berkeley Vale locality (this includes the towns of Berkeley, Cam, Dursley, Wotton- Under-Edge and surrounding villages), however as long as places are available referrals are welcome from across the Stroud district. For more information visit your GP or Nurse or contact Gina Humphris at Stroud District Council on (01453) 754505.
