This document is currently referred to as a material consideration in all planning applications affecting the canals corridor. The document does not have Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) status, but it has been ratified by full Council and has been in use, for development control purposes, since July 2004.
The Cotswold Canals restoration is more than just an aspiration, it is a reality, with significant funding in place and work due to commence in autumn 2006. It is anticipated that this realisation will bring development proposals forward along the canal corridor.
In advance of the production of Local Development Documents (including the canals Area Action Plan and the Design Framework SPD), a position statement has been composed, with the aim of providing clarity for developers on how the Council will consider development proposals along the Cotswold Canals corridor. This document indicates how proposals will be considered (to achieve appropriate and sustainable forms of development) within the canal environment.
The position statement and checklist pulls together existing planning policies and statutory procedures to provide canal-focused advice in one place. It will enable developers to formulate their development proposals with an awareness of the canal context and current Council procedures and protocols. The Council will continue to operate in the public interest and will aim to foster sustainable development, providing homes, investment and jobs in a way that adds to, rather than detracts from, the quality of the canal environment.
