In 2026 what will the district look like? And how will it function?
- More jobs, more homes - and where should they go? Young people, ageing population - how do we provide for their needs? Rising CO 2 emissions, beautiful countryside, rare wildlife - how do we protect the environment for future generations?
These and many other questions will be considered over the coming year as the Council prepares its Core Strategy. What do you think? Are there other issues we should be looking into? What are the most important matters to focus on? What options do we have for tackling them and what are the merits of the various alternative strategies we could pursue?
We want your views as residents, employers, landowners and investors in this District. Register your interest in the Core Strategy by signing up to our Online Consultation Portal : we can keep you posted and make sure you are notified when future rounds of consultation are happening.
Public consultation on Alternative Strategies (Monday 8 th February to Monday 22 nd March 2010)
This is your chance to comment on the direction of future growth and development in Stroud District. This round of consultation looks at a range of possible routes that we could take in order to accommodate around 2,000 additional homes by 2026, as well as encouraging the generation of about two new jobs for every new household built. The challenge facing the Council is to ensure that future growth is managed in a sustainable way, making provision for homes, jobs and community facilities, whilst at the same time protecting and improving our environment and addressing the issues associated with climate change.
The consultation on “Alternative Strategies” sets out seven ‘options' for the distribution of housing, employment and other forms of development across the District, up to 2026. These options are wide-ranging, from a very concentrated strategy where 2000 homes would be located within just one or two large developments, to the idea of dispersing development around many smaller settlements with the aim of boosting rural communities. Although some parishes are more likely to be affected by the proposals than others, virtually every parish is touched by at least one of the seven alternative strategies. The Council isn't yet committed to any one strategy, although some are more realistic than others, and we want to get the views of as many people and as many communities as possible.

Public exhibitions and forums:
Council officers will be manning a touring exhibition, which will appear at ten venues across the District during the consultation period (see map). You can come along to any one of these, but we are hoping that this grouping will help to build up a picture of the particular issues and options that most concern or appeal to different parts of the District. You can drop in at any time between 3pm and 7pm (or between 10am and 1pm for the Saturday events).
We are also planning to hold some special events targeted at young people and the business community. If you would be interested in taking part in either of these, please contact the Planning Strategy Team.

We will publish a Report on the findings of our Key Issues consultation, which took place between Friday 13th March and Friday 1st May 2009. These findings will help to shape the “Alternative Strategies” document, which we will be consulting on from January 2010.
Go to our online consultation portal, where all the individual consultation responses are archived and you can download a copy of the questionnaire.
20 questions that will help to shape the future of Stroud District
In March 2009, we published a Discussion Paper and a questionnaire about some of the key issues facing the district, together with some suggested options for addressing them.
The survey asked participants to rate the various options, and tell us which of the issues they thought were most or least important. We also asked people to tell us if they thought we'd missed something.
The responses to these 20 questions will help the Council decide what the Core strategy will say about
