It is hard to believe that it has been twelve months since Stroud District Council was awarded £199,777 from the Big Lottery Fund to establish six new play projects to benefit the district. Since May 2008, a great deal has been achieved to improve opportunities for challenging, safe and free play opportunities, particularly for children in disadvantaged areas.
The new Play Ranger service has successfully delivered to over 1000 children and young people and 77 parents in Stonehouse, Nouncells Cross and Forest Green and will be delivering in four new areas from June 2009. Both Cam Boulder Circle and Lawnside Multi Use Games Area were completed by June 2008, followed by Kings Stanley Multi Use Games Area, which was launched by local Olympic Gold medallist, Peter Reid. Stratford Park Skate Plaza was completed and launched on a very wet Sunday in October 2008 and has had over 1000 users since its inception. The final Multi Use Games Area build, at Uplands, was completed in March and forms part of Stroud Town Council’s aim to build a multi play environment for the town.
In addition, a new play website has been created, for children and young people to be aware of the Play Strategy in a fun manner. Check it out at www.playinstrouddistrict.org
