Big Lottery Funding - Children's Play Initiative 2006
The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for distributing half of the money that the National Lottery raises for good causes and in March 2006 it launched the Children's Play Initiative. Of the £155m made available to developing play provision, £124m has been committed to local authorities across the country for the Children's Play Programme
and £16m towards Playful Ideas Programme.
Stroud District - A New Play Strategy
Stroud District Council has written a new play strategy 2007 - 2012 and as a result SDC received £200,000 from the Big Lottery Fund (BLF). Stroud District Council also input a further £56,000 towards the overall projects. Please see below for further details on both the grant and the projects.
Big Lottery Fund (BLF) criterion states that all projects must be:
- Free of charge
- Freedom of choice
- Free to come and go
And supported/endorsed by the Local Authority as follows:
- Recognition and awareness - for the vital importance of play for all children to be widely recognised and considered by policy makers, opinion formers and the public
- Policies and strategies - for all government policies affecting the use of public space and the provision of public services to reflect this importance.
- Quality provision and space - for play provision of all kinds, including public space, to reflect play principles, standards and good practice and those for inclusion, diversity and equalities.
The Play Strategy is strategically linked from national through to local agendas:
Every child matters priorities - Be healthy, staying safe, enjoy and achieve, make a positive contribution and achieve economic well being.
Local Area Agreement priorities for the county - Children and young people development, healthier communities, safer stronger communities, economic development.
SDC Corporate priorities for children and young people - play, economic regeneration, environment, community safety, health and inclusion.

Portfolio of Projects
Stroud District Council continues to work with local play partners/stakeholders to develop the portfolio of projects that focus on areas of greatest need; The SDC Play Strategy has thus been created in partnership and consultation with the new Stroud and District Play Development Group, key stakeholders and consultation with children, young people and their families. There are six key projects, based on BLF criterion and selected via consultation and mapping evidence as follows:-
- New play ranger scheme for the district 2008 - 2010 (starting April 2008)
- Skate park redevelopment at Stratford Park (starting March 2008)
- Boulders project Cam Jubilee Field (starting April 2008)
- Three multi-use games area (MUGA)
- Kings Stanley, Marling Close Field (May 2008)
- Nailsworth, Lawnside (June 2008)
- Stroud, Uplands (August 2008)
