Inclusive Fitness Initiative is a jointly funded project between Sport England and Stroud District Council and housed at Stratford Park Leisure Centre.
IFI makes developments in access, fitness equipment and sports development for people with disabilities.
IFI operates around five key principles:
- Accessible facilities
- Inclusive fitness equipment
- Staff with appropriate training and skills
- Appropriate, inclusive marketing strategies
- The development of alternative inclusive sporting opportunities

Gym Buddy Scheme
To introduce and deliver the Gym Buddy Scheme at Stratford Park Leisure Centre in Stroud which will improve the service and provide additional support for disabled users within the fitness suite.
The Gym Buddy's Role
- To accompany and/or work out alongside disabled user(s) within the fitness suite and provide additional support e.g. adjusting weight stacks/ starts positions and programming consoles etc
- To provide additional support within the fitness suite during timetabled supervised sessions or as and when is convenient for the disabled person and Gym Buddy
- To motivate, encourage, mentor and befriend a disabled person and support them in achieving their fitness goals
- To help breakdown barriers to participation for disabled people i.e. access, communication, social and psychological.
