Outline your typical working day:

Intercom/Visit all residents, checking both physical and mental well being. Carry out individual support plans, needs and risk assessments for tenants and review these on a systematic basis. Update these plans as and when necessary. Liaise with GP's, Social Workers, Residents' families, Neighbourhood Wardens, Community Police etc.
Report & monitor repairs.
Check identification of all contractors/workmen to Scheme.
Ensure security and cleanliness of communal areas of scheme are maintained.
Identify and deal with any problems residents may have - can range from a resident being severely depressed to being able to mend a fridge door! Refer residents to relevant external agencies for any assistance they require.
Provide extra support as required, e.g. if resident is unwell, or has been bereaved.
Maintain "community spirit" of scheme by promoting and helping to organise social functions, either at the Scheme or externally.
Complete respective Health & Safety checks in line with SDC Policies & Procedures.
Check and respond to e-mails, preparing any necessary reports, compiling information etc.
Assist with enquiries from prospective new tenants.
Assist new tenants to settle in to the scheme.
Advise residents of day's events (if any) at the Scheme.
Maintain Communal Notice Boards, detailing any local events.

What do you like about your job?

I enjoy helping people, and feel immense job satisfaction from being able to make someone's life happier, even by doing the simplest task for them. My job is very varied, and no two days are ever the same. I meet people from all walks of life and am continually learning!

Best thing about your job?

Being able to support the elderly in order to help them remain independent in their own homes for as long as possible.

What specific skills are needed?

Experience of working with older people in a caring or nursing capacity.

Good organisational and communication skills.

Patience, understanding and an ability to listen.

Able to remain calm when under pressure, and to 'hit the ground running.'

A warm, friendly and approachable personality.

You need to be decisive, self-motivated, and able to show fairness and flexibility.

Computer skills would be an advantage.

Any qualifications needed?

Diploma in National Sheltered Housing Studies would be desirable or the willingness to undertake this training. Sound general education

A driving licence would be desirable or the ability to travel to attend meetings or training courses as necessary.

Current First Aid Certificate or the willingness to under this training.
