Frequently Asked Question Regarding Garden Waste

Question

Instead of sending material in pre-paid garden waste sacks to landfill why does Stroud District Council not operate a kerbside collection of garden waste for composting when other local authorities are doing it?

Answer

We feel that the best way to deal with this waste is to compost it at home. After all, it provides a valuable nutrient rich compost that can be used in the garden! Where home composting is not possible, either because of a lack of space or too much material is being produced, it can be taken to a local household Waste Recycling Centre for composting or place in pre-paid garden sacks for landfill. Other local authorities have found that when they start collecting garden waste for composting, although the recycling rate increases, the overall amount of waste collected also increases. This results in a bigger bill for disposing of it, not to mention the cost of the vehicles and staff.
