Black Sacks

Households receive weekly collections of non-recyclable waste, items that we have to send to landfill, through black sacks. On your scheduled collection day crews will leave a replacement black sack at your property.

We ask that waste is presented at kerbside by 0600hrs on the morning of collection, as this is the time that crews commence work.

What happens to our black sack waste?

All material collected through the weekly black sack collections is taken to Hempstead Landfill Site on the outskirts of Gloucester. Here once the waste has been removed from the collection vehicles, it is mixed with inert rubble and compacted. From this point on the waste will remain here with biodegradable items like cardboard, paper and food waste breaking down to produce greenhouse gases and harmful liquids.

The practise of landfilling waste is bad as we lose precious resources that could otherwise have been recycled. For example why place paper in your black sack when it can be put into your kerbside box and made into newsprint? It may be that you are placing items in your black sacks that you did not know could be recycled. Click on the link below to print off a waste audit sheet to see if you can help us to do more

Stroud District Council have been set strict targets as to the amount of biodegradable waste that we send to landfill. As a result over the coming years we will be reaching out to all residents so that we can work in partnership together to ensure we meet our obligations and do not incur financial penalties.
