The Council is unable to help with the costs of funerals but if you are the partner of the deceased, and in receipt of certain benefits, you may be entitled to help from the social fund which is administered by Jobcentre Plus.
The Council may be able to deal with the burial or cremation of a person who died in the area if no other arrangements can be made. We would normally only accept responsibility for burying or cremating the deceased if there were no surviving, near-relatives who were capable of making the funeral arrangements. In these circumstances the local authority is entitled to recover its costs from the estate of the person who died or from any surviving wife, husband, mother or father of the deceased.
